I will never understand why certain art styles become popular on deviantArt. Personally, I think eyes are great, and even the most mundane eye can be manipulated to the point where you just drop your jaw and say "...wow." BUT, I'm really not into the whole macro eye shots. To me, they are kind of...boring. It's just an eye. There is not a whole lot you can do to an eye, other than add makeup or sparkles. But then, it's still just an eye. To me, art is supposed to tell a story. I can't see what the point of most eye pictures are.
I think the problem is this: somebody makes a picture, and it gets thousands of favorites. It makes them happy, so they decide to make more of the same exact type of pictures, because they know that if THAT one was popular, the rest will be too. And because most of the art viewers on this site don't know how to favorite anything that hasn't been done a million times before, this trend will probably never die.
To be honest, I think it's not the complexity that makes a good photomanip. Yet, the "eye" thingy is a pure example of what Kant calls the first stage of enjoying an artwork- for it's form only. It basically means that a person who watches art this way is simply and only enjoying it's "physical aspects" like colors, shades and shapes without trying to find a deeper meaning of the art piece. In this case I presume people react to "ooooh shiney-ooooh nice colors" more than anything and they don't find the urge to think of the art work on a more profound level. I hope you understand me
I know... I was confused about that too. dA audience is like that - you can expect which of your pieces will get more s And did you see her new journal (that made the today's page) about people complaining about her eye manips? Geez.
